Self-care is how you take your power back.

Looking after yourself is sometimes your way out of toxic environments. It’s the only excuse that is actually not an excuse and can become the foundation of a process of healing. My current toxic environment seems to want to become a new level of unbearable and self-care is going to be key for me to survive in this place a little bit longer until I’m more or less financially ready to leave.

If you’ve read some of my previous posts, you’ll know how much I want a career change as my workplace has become very negative and stressful for me and so many others working in that environment. Until I can leave, I need to put some money aside and make my life easier when I finally take that leap of faith. However, two days back in and I’m already struggling to cope so I’m trying small things to make it less stressful and to cheer myself on.

I’ve started reading again and hoping to do so a little bit every day to take my mind off things, I decided to leave work ASAP when everything was done, no lingering around. I’ve decided to not talk about work very much at home so as to not put all that negativity into my home and I’m planning on having something to do for fun each weekend so I have something to look forward to during the week when I’m having a hard time.

You may think that these things are normal and something I could always do in my free time, but my job is mentally-draining and I’m expected to do the work of at least two people which I usually bring home because I can’t stay there for that long. So, I usually eat my dinner in front of the computer where my work is, I wake up early and do some more, any small break I have is spent dealing with work issues. My only pause is when I sleep and even there, I dream of things that have happened at work and have nightmares.

Self-care is my only way of making this exit bearable and there are so many people in this situation. You, the reader, might be going through something similar as well. If you are, know that you are not alone. This is unfortunately very common and something that happens unfairly to a lot of people. Self-care is the best way to survive this until you can completely leave a toxic environment. So, take the time to think about what you need to get yourself through this and give it to yourself.

Small things make big things happen. Afterwards, self-care will be something you do out of habit and not out of need.
